A Perfect Day Trip from Lucknow to Ayodhya: A Family Adventure to the Holy City

By Sudha Srivastava | LucknowScope.com

Living in Lucknow for over five decades, I’ve watched our city transform into a vibrant cultural hub with excellent connectivity to nearby spiritual and historical destinations. One journey that never gets old, and one I’ve made countless times with family and friends, is the trip to Ayodhya – the sacred birthplace of Lord Rama. If you’re looking for a meaningful day trip from Lucknow that combines spirituality, history, and quality family time, Ayodhya is your answer. Let me share my experience and guide you through this beautiful journey.

Why Ayodhya? The Spiritual Pull

Ayodhya holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Indians. It’s not just a pilgrimage destination; it’s a living connection to our cultural and spiritual heritage. Since the consecration of the magnificent Shree Ram Janmabhumi Temple in 2024, Ayodhya has become even more accessible and welcoming to visitors. The city is approximately 130 kilometers from Lucknow, making it perfect for a day trip. You’ll return home with your heart full, stories to tell, and perhaps some of the local delicacies packed in your bag.

What I love most about this journey is how it brings families together – whether you’re visiting temples, walking along the ghats, or simply soaking in the spiritual atmosphere. My grandchildren have made this trip several times, and each time they discover something new.

Getting There: Your Travel Options

By Train

This is my personal favorite, especially for families. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure. From Lucknow Junction, the Shatabdi Express and several other trains connect directly to Ayodhya. The journey takes approximately 2-2.5 hours, depending on the train you choose.

Advantages: Comfortable seating, refreshments available, no traffic worries, and you can relax while watching the landscape change. For families with children, trains offer space to move around.

Things to keep in mind: Book your tickets in advance, especially on weekends. The early morning trains are ideal as they give you maximum time in Ayodhya. Verify the current schedule as timings can change seasonally.

By Car or Taxi

If you prefer flexibility and privacy, hiring a car or driving your own vehicle is an excellent option. The drive via NH 27 is scenic and well-maintained. The journey takes about 3-3.5 hours depending on traffic conditions in Lucknow.

Advantages: You can leave at your own pace, stop for breakfast at wayside eateries, and have complete control over your itinerary. Perfect if you’re traveling with elderly family members who might need comfort breaks.

Things to keep in mind: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition. The roads are generally good, but driving in summer requires air conditioning. Hire from reputable taxi services if you don’t want to drive yourself.

By Bus

Government buses and private operators like Sharma Travels and other Lucknow-based services run regular services to Ayodhya. It’s the most economical option.

Advantages: Budget-friendly, frequent services, and less hassle with parking.

Things to keep in mind: Buses can get crowded, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons. The journey might take 3.5-4 hours. Book your return ticket as soon as you board.

Your Itinerary: A Perfect Day in Ayodhya

I recommend starting early – leave Lucknow by 6-7 AM to make the most of your day. Here’s how I structure my family visits:

Morning (9 AM – 12 PM): Shree Ram Janmabhumi Temple

This is the highlight of any Ayodhya visit. The newly constructed temple is an architectural marvel, combining traditional Hindu temple design with modern facilities. The pristine white marble structure, intricate carvings, and the sanctum sanctorum create an atmosphere of profound devotion.

When visiting with family, arrive early to avoid the mid-day rush. The temple now has well-organized queues and security measures. Allow 1.5-2 hours for darshan (viewing the deity). My tip: Women and children can often move through dedicated queues that might be less crowded. The temple authorities are family-friendly and provide seating areas if anyone needs to rest.

The temple premises are spacious and clean, with excellent facilities including restrooms and drinking water stations. Photography is restricted inside the main temple, but the exterior courtyard offers beautiful photo opportunities.

Mid-Morning (12 PM – 1:30 PM): Kanak Bhawan

After the main temple, head to Kanak Bhawan, which is about 2-3 kilometers away. This beautifully maintained temple is said to have been gifted to Goddess Sita by Kaikeyi. The name “Kanak” means gold, and the temple lives up to its name with its ornate golden decorations and well-preserved idols of Rama and Sita.

The temple is less crowded than Ram Janmabhumi and offers a more intimate spiritual experience. The architecture showcases fine craftsmanship with detailed carvings. With children, they’ll be fascinated by the intricate decorations and stories. The temple’s surroundings are peaceful, and the caretakers are usually happy to share the temple’s history.

Lunch Break (1:30 PM – 2:30 PM)

I always recommend eating local food when possible. Head to the Ram Nagar or Cantonment areas for authentic Ayodhya cuisine. Try the famous Peda (sweet) from Ayodhya – it’s something you must take back home. Hotels near the main temple area offer decent vegetarian North Indian cuisine. Many places serve Thali (a complete meal) which is economical for families.

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 4:30 PM): Hanuman Garhi and Saryu Ghat

Hanuman Garhi is about 3 kilometers from the city center. This 10th-century temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, who is believed to be the guardian of Ayodhya. The temple is situated atop a hillock, accessible by climbing 76 steps. While this might seem challenging, the spiritual energy and the view from the top are worth every step.

I won’t pretend the climb is easy, especially in summer heat. My suggestion: Start early before the afternoon heat peaks, or visit in late afternoon. Older family members or those with mobility issues might find it challenging, but rest areas are available.

From Hanuman Garhi, proceed to Ram Ki Paidi (Saryu Ghat), located along the sacred Saryu River. This series of beautiful ghats is where devotees take holy dips and participate in the evening Aarti. If timing permits, try to catch the Aarti (prayer ceremony) which typically happens around 5:30-6 PM. The experience of witnessing the river illuminated by oil lamps and listening to the chants is magical, especially for children experiencing it for the first time.

The ghats have developed significantly over recent years with better amenities, though you should still be careful while stepping on the wet stones.

Late Afternoon (4:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Dashrath Mahal and Leisurely Exploration

If time permits, visit Dashrath Mahal, the historic palace said to be the residence of King Dashrath, Lord Rama’s father. The structure offers insights into the royal heritage and the historical significance of Ayodhya. While not as grand as it once was, it remains an important landmark connecting you to the city’s regal past.

Take time to walk through the local markets. The bazaars near the temples are bustling with religious items, handicrafts, and local products. This is where you’ll find the famous Ayodhya Peda, tulsi mala beads, and other souvenirs.

Practical Tips for Your Family Day Trip

What to Pack:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (you’ll be doing considerable walking)
  • Light, modest clothing (temples prefer covered shoulders and knees)
  • Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, and umbrella
  • Water bottles and some light snacks
  • Small towel for Saryu Ghat visit if you plan to take a dip
  • Cash (while many places now accept digital payments, having cash is helpful)

Best Time to Visit: October to March is ideal – the weather is pleasant and not too hot. Avoid peak pilgrimage seasons (Diwali, Navratri) unless you specifically want the festive atmosphere, as crowds can be overwhelming.

Accommodation: If you decide to extend your stay, Ayodhya has developed several good hotels in the budget and mid-range categories. Many Lucknow residents now prefer overnight stays to experience the city’s evening atmosphere more fully.

The Journey Back

Plan to leave Ayodhya by 6-7 PM to reach Lucknow by late evening. If traveling by train, book your return ticket for 6 PM or later. The journey back is often reflective – a time when families discuss what they’ve seen and experienced.

A Personal Reflection

Over my years living in Lucknow, I’ve seen many changes in how we travel and how accessible pilgrimage sites have become. What once required weeks of planning can now be accomplished in a single day. Yet, the spiritual essence remains unchanged. Ayodhya still holds the power to connect us with something larger than ourselves, to remind us of our cultural roots, and to bring families closer together.

Whether you’re a devout believer or simply curious about Indian culture and history, Ayodhya offers something meaningful. It’s a day trip that stays with you long after you return to Lucknow.
